Of Masters and Their Slaves

"It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master." ―Ayn Rand

Does Islam Require its Adherents to Murder Non-believers?

In ancient times, the condition for B’nai Israel to wage Holy War on Canaan and annihilate its heathen was the presence of a Prophet or His Trustee (Custodian of the holy message) among the faithfuls.

As Abrahamic religious traditions reveal to us, the Prophets Moses and Aaron passed away before B’nai Israel were ready to conquer the Promised Land. But, Prophet Moses left His divine message in the hands of a Trustee, the Prophet Joshua, who did eventually lead the holy invasion.

These same ancient prerequisites for Holy War apply today just like they applied during the times of the Prophet Moses and the Prophet Abraham before Him. So, the frequently cited Quranic command to wage war against hostile unbelievers can be applied only under the command of The Prophet Muhammad or His Trustees.

At this time, there is not a recognized Custodian of Islam among us in this dimension of existence. Both the Sunni and the Shiite Muslims believe that an End-times personality, al-Imam al-Mahdi, is a legitimate Trustee of Islam.

The Shiites believe that until al-Imam al-Mahdi reappears, no offensive military Jihad can be launched. Defensive Jihad, on the other hand, is permissible.

Traditional Sunni jurisprudence requires the presence of a Caliph before offensive military Jihad can be initiated. The Ottomans were the last recognized Sunni Caliphs.

Today, there is neither a legitimate nor a recognized Sunni Caliphate.

Daesh (ISIS) outlaw
Individuals or even organized groups, such as the so-called "Islamic State" (a.k.a., Daesh, ISIS and ISIL) cannot take matters into their own hands and start slaughtering people under the pretext of Islam, Jihad and Hudud (Islamic punishment). Simply put, the actions of Daesh are not sanctioned by the Islamic doctrine.

But, who is to prevent Daesh from using Islamic logos, Quranic Ayahs (i.e., verses, or more accurately, Signs), and Islamic parlance?

Those who can’t go beyond the sensational and the guise will conclude that Daesh, at its core, is truly Islamic. But, it is not. The rotten core of Daesh consists of former Baathists!

Regardless of its popularity among large segments of Muslims, Daesh is an illegitimate, rabid, power-hungry entity that uses a facade of Islam to attract disgruntled or alienated, but certainly misguided, cannon fodder.

Daesh will have numerous successes and defeats in the years to come. It will bring more chaos to a wounded and bleeding region. But, like it suddenly emerged in northwestern Iraq and northeastern Syria, Daesh will eventually suddenly collapse. Indeed, rabid entities such as Daesh are self-destructive.

The important point to recognize is that Daesh is an anomaly. It does not represent authentic Islam. It’s a short-lasting scheme. And, it’s not the first bloody religious sham.

But, to answer the main question, No, Islam does not require nor permit its adherents to murder non-believers.
